I don't even think he's that much of a homophobe lol. A real homophobe wouldn't be tolerant at all, nor would he have sex with him. He was probably bought up with certain principles and the mindset that gay = promiscuous. Of course he comes off as entitled and naive but that's just from his social class and misunderstanding
