Well, in my opinion both versions are exessive. She lost one child and what, decides that caring for the other one is not necessary anymore and it can just go and die? I get that she is depressed, but even so she should be trying to care for the unborn child, it is a mother's duty to do that even if it is difficult.
I read the novel too but all I remember is that Alice blamed herself a lot and became really depressed to the point where she stopped to eat and had sleep disturb but I don’t remember of any suicide attempts.
