for mo dao zu shi should i start with the manhwa or anime ?

I prefer the anime though, if you want to start the manhwa it's up to you

I’d prefer to read at this order: Novel > Manhua > Anime

Novel: It’s more detailed than manhua and anime so it wouldn’t be too confusing when you started Mo Dao Zu Shi. Besides, it’s more complete than manhua and anime, the story’s also fully translated. There’s only a few extras left to be translated. The smut scenes are at the end. The translator also explained a lot of cultivation terms in detail. There’s also a list of character names to remember. For example:
MC- Birth Name: Wei Ying
Courtesy Name: Wei WuXian
Title Name: Yiling Partriach
ML- Birth Name: Lan Zhan
Courtesy Name: Lan Wangji
Title Name: Han GuangJun
There’ll be lots of names involved so it’s best if you remember all the important characters’ names.

Manhua: It’s cute to see the chibi version of Wei WuXian tho some details are skipped and it kinda seems pretty rushed.

Anime: The graphics and fight scenes are amazing and I think if you didn’t read the novel first, it’s quite hard to comprehend wth’s happening. But basically, it’s mostly flashback anyway. No intimate scenes much.

typically i would start with novels before reading manhua or watching anime for Chinese material. for mdzs, i first got to know it through the anime. if u like detailed plots, novel is the first choice. the manhua follows the novel, just isn't as detailed. the anime doesn't really follow the novel straight up, the plot order is rearranged. so if u want to watch anime first, u might get confused when switching to other medium (like i did).

extra info: that there's 2 versions of novel. the difference is removal/addition of scenes and the wording, it merely changes the flow between events and not major developments.
