to me it seems hino-sensei thought of her as a boy at the beggining but changed her mind in the middle of the story and fixed some stuff to make ren a girl, but now we know she is a girl for sure, though she uses short hair and "masculine" clothing
in japanese language, use neutral pronouns. instead of he or she. authors use often the neutral pronouns. I'm sure the mangaka used the neutral pronoun until now.
i said that cuz i went back to read ren's earlier appearances and the drawing changed compared to recent chapters where she looks more feminine...or that's how i perceived it

In first chapter Ai said to Kaname that Ren was her little brother? Ren even looks like boy in the present. But in the past that was a girl and her little sister? When Ren was born was a girl for sure... In the past Ren was clearly a girl but in the present its a boy...
