The reason this manga makes so many people sad is because shishio was, by no means, a bad person. He was never awful, as male leads usually are, to the girl. He was not as good to her as mamura was, and was wishy-washy, but never treated her badly like most male leads do. Mamura was great, and what the female lead deserved, like most second male leads that get the support of readers, but in this one, sensei still had a lot of supporters purely because he never did anything that made him a bad person in general, and he was sincere in his feelings too (as a teacher, him liking a student freely wouldn't have been good either). I totally support mamura getting the girl, but i feel bad for the sensei too, so hopefully things go okay with him and his neighbour
