For manga they do it free too
All free. Some of the raws can cost money though or they just snatch it off lezhin, webtoon, webcomic, etc.
everything is for free, some take donations to buy raws tho.
i think someone was arrested in japan for making money of scanlations once or twice, not sure.
mangago as a site makes money tho (ads)
Do translator groups on mangago earn money or do they just translate and typeset all for free?
