honestly I think she's very clever and smart, she literally managed to pull off being a double agent with limited resources for years. she knows what to say and when, and she can usually deduce cause and effects completely accurately. she's just a dumbass when it comes to anything socially inclined.

They only vaguely show us this. Of course she had maintained such a spot with the red woman, but was she really in any danger to begin with? They only show them as kids and that the red woman disliked her and SHOWED only a little of her transactions with the red woman... then the SKIPPED into adulthood but don’t SHOW us what the mc has DONE that’s smart or cunning after that... like was that ALL? What else has she given this lady to show her worth? How is this red lady even “evil”???? The Emperor is more “evil” than her, I think she focused on the wrong her person to worry about the most.
She knows what to say cause she BREED in this lifestyle but nothing in this story really SHOWS how smart she is. Also, there is a limit to being smart AND A DUMBASS in certain things!
The plot thus far hasn’t proved to me yet with actual event/scenes/evidence that she’s smart or even STRUGGLING to stay alive. It’s all vague and skips to random time periods in her life and has no solid ANYTHING!
Read “Light&Shadow” and read “Lucia” (the novel cause it’s completed and amazing). These are just some examples of what good writing is and how to make a solid plot, complex characters, proper character development, strong female leads (in two very different types of “strong”), and awesome relationships. These are “smart” and “cunning” mc who use their resources and abilities to the limit who SHOW us how desperate they are in their current predicaments. We don’t need to be TOLD that this person has a conversation with this other person, you need to SHOW us the conversation happening, make the readers involved in what the characters are going through, not just bystanders hearing second hand what we should have heard/seen firsthand. That is the difference between good and bad writing. Just a simple thing but so important.

I fr commend you for such a well though out and thorough reply. Its true that the time skip left a lot of things up in the air. there some inconsistencies in the way her character is portrayed. also I have in fact read light and shadow, I wrote a review on it as well, Its one of my favorites. the plot is well written and it has well crafted characters to boot, and like you said there was no question when it came to the characters' personalities and intelligence. with that being said, I see your point and you've given me a new perspective.
I fr dont understand how she could be so damn smart and clever and yet not see the painfully obvious facts that were staring her right in the face good God
