He didn't try to hang himself. It's an allegory towards living life as if one is the walking dead. Or as if life having no meaning due to life circumstances feeling as hell on earth.
The picture is providing visual aspect between the bullying and him wanting death to take him away.
okay so I was looking back on everything we've learned so far but does anybody remember in chapter 6 on page 21 where it shows the mc hanging in his school uniform? what if he tried to kill himself and that's why there's memory gaps? such as why he doesn't remember ever being friends with Sungtae.
