Now that I think of it, I don't think I've come across the name 'Hotaka' before. Now I'm wondering how it's written? 穂高?Would it be read as Hodaka instead of Hotaka since the 高 comes after another kanji?

His name is 穂嵩 (Ho•taka). I don't really know how to explain the meaning, but that's not the main point.

About your question on the 高 kanji, it depends. Usually you would use "daka" or "kou" as a second reading for the kanji, but with names it's pretty different. For example, there's a famous mall in Japan called 高島屋 (Taka•shima•ya) and your read it as Taka

Japanese can be a really weird language sometimes. You're never sure which reading it is until you get it wrong. That's why sometimes translators get the characters name wrong in the beginning and then correct it later
