I get the feeling that Huan Wen is dealing with too much. Like he might even attempt suicide at some point because of how low his self esteem is and how much he overwhelms himself with things.
It might be pessimistic of me, but that's how depression is. He has a lot of issues, but pretends to be perfectly fine and busies himself with work and studies.
