I think he's worried the curse might show up and bounce back to the prince or that the curse will show up later down the line. My issue is that his conscious was cleared instead of spending those years looking to relieve the curse from Ale. He just pass it on and stopped thinking about it. It would have popped up again with his grand children
But let's all be real. Who wouldn't do anything for their kid when they find out that their time will run out painfully? The king wanted to save his child by any means neccessary and I'm not saying that justifies it but think of his point of view. All I'm saying is I understand why.
