Not exactly what may have happened... basically asians sometimes use Hanja/Kanji/Chinese characters to write their names, to give names proper meaning and so. So what they did here was: use the Hanja letters of their Korean names and adapt it to a Japanese name using a common base

aimu's name is translated Aimu is originally Sarang, Ai and sarang both would translate with love
I think is just like how some western authors make comics and use any name they want, usually Japanese Cyxx
Hi, actually their names are all in Korean! The translators picked up the KR > JP translation, thinking it was the original, so they kept the JP names. Aimu’s original name is actually Sarang, both of which means Love.

But I'm confused, if they don't have Japanese name from the start this changes everything... I need answers
