I'm trying to read it now...currently only on chapter 3....mdzs was easier because I was able to read a lot of the manhua first....I'm already confused lol..idk who the chick talking in his head is, where dude was when clock hit him, or if we are in a flashback yet or not lol ugghhhhhhh I hope it gets better I heard the story is soooo amazing

This was the first Chinese novel I read, so it was confusing for me a little too at first! But there's really only a handful of characters that the story focuses on, so it doesn't really get as confusing later on. The side characters are all really great and well developed. The story does switch between past and present like MDZS did, but its lot more clearer and less confusing pacing.
So for your questions, story starts after he has been stuck exiled on Earth for the past 800 years. This is the present. He has recently ascended/crashed onto Heaven for the 3rd time. The lady talking in sort of the librarian of Heaven and knows a lot of information, and she helps coordinate Heaven's communication system. All the Gods have the ability to communicate to each other through their minds using this system. As the story progresses, you will get to see flashbacks about what happened in the past, how he was originally a human who was a Prince and ascended to Heaven the first 2 times, and the long, terrible tragic backstory behind why he is who he is today. I don't want to spoil, but there is an overarching heavy plot connecting every thing that happens in the present now that he has returned. Prepare for lots of twists and turns, and big surprises.

The first few chapters are indeed confusing, but what made me stay intrigued and continue was because of the slow hints of one particular character that will keep showing up. I won't spoil, but keep an eye out for the appearance of silver butterflies, the color red, fire. Both in the past and present. I'm a complete sucker for slow burning romances, so that's why I loved, loved this.
And I loved the intricate plot-it seems like he's just going on random missions at first, but trust me, everything will circle back and connect later on. The main character may seem carefree at first, but he's really smart and his backstory just becomes more and more tragic the more you learn more about all that he went through and how it changes him. And it's a lot. Hope you manage to enjoy it!
I binged through all 5 books of the novel in 2 days, staying up until 5am to finish. Honestly one of the most romantic and best stories I've ever read. I honestly think the romance in this is better than MDZS, because of how deeply it is shown, and the years and years and yearsss of suffering, sacrifice, and just pure devotion. The story is even more freakin tragic and sad than MDZS, I've never seriously actually cried so much reading a book. But the ending is so satisfying, its worth it. Im so freakin excited for the anime and drama, for more people to realize what an incredible story this is.
