First of all, I think she's pretending to be sick too. Like, to make him stay with her and not go ut with any other girl. Maybe it was part of her plan to make him think of her as a woman and not his little sister.
And I believe she was against the marriage, but due to them being broke and indebted, she wasn't able to reject the idea.
Is that childhood friend of duke pretending or somethin? Cos she got that manipulative vibe or maybe just over thinking coz of reading too much similar kinda shit bc if you really love him why would you bring him ruin? Why drag him and his territory down?? Why did you let him marry another woman? Why would you only support him emotionally and not in anything else?? Then you act as if you were wronged cos yo boo got married to a woman with wit and power when you have been doing nothing? Could have educated yourself helped in the estate and gained his affection by working together to keep the place afloat not get bankrupt..... i love how this is going but i kinda wanna drop cos shitty villain but wanna read the story just bc of mc and see how she makes everything better.........this so frustrating ╥﹏╥
