It also has to do with how much harder it is to tone black hair in traditional manga making, that's why most characters have plain white hair. Not that big of a deal in newer digitally made comics tho like webtoons.
Inking is a funky process when it comes to serializing a manga, so authors try not to use solid black alot.
I think most mangaka nowadays use clip studio(etc) and wouldn't it be easier to not have to worry about drawing diff locks of hair??
Any thoughts on how manga always has a mix of people with dark and light hair(even eyebrows and eyelashes!) and eyes, even though the actual colors are almost always black??(in Japan, at least) I'm thinking it's just for aesthetics and also telling people apart because of same face syndrome, but it makes it near impossible to tell foreigners apart from actual Japanese people lol. And then as a result it feels like foreigners always have lighter hair on average and almost never black. Just seems kinda funny to me.
