He's a problem teen running away from home and wounding up with the gang. He refused to join the robberly and volunteer to do less violence work. From his and that situation, it showed he doesn't want to do bad thing, not a bad guy by first choice. He doesn't seem to care much about his life, family doesn't want him.

I mean he picks his pocket by bumping into him in a parking garage? Most pickpockets stay in crowded areas with lots of tourists so they can quickly melt into the crowd and disappear. Kids not very good at it. Thankfully.
