where did the 'betraying the cousin' notion come from?
In a story or plot like this expect the unexpected. We’re still at the early part of the story what we have seen so far about their relationship is the good side. I suppose King Erus is not only besiege by the god/monsters but also from people who wants the throne ( who don’t know the responsibility of being in the position) That’s why I’m hoping that Rowan is not being used by anyone or even if he did fake his death it’s for the good of the King.

I hope Rowan didn’t die or fake his death to betray his cousin, he is the only one left who genuinely cares for Erus.
