Yes, the children would be our first priority but it's depend on how the mother assess the risk whether their children safe or not.
If the fairies told her that Jill hid in hidden/safe place, would you still leave behind Miriam and others to go there which full of murderers as the children are your first priority which could cause you and others get killed except your children?
I bet you're happy that your children didn't die while others will blame you and could cause your children live not well. If even the father died due to your action, I bet you still relieved and thoughts she will live well when your action actually make her suffer and suicided because her parents died and people hated her because of you which she have depression. In the end, there no use to save her since it's make her even suffer.

So what if the fairies tell her later, in the same chapter, the fairies told Jill to hide in library. In the end we can see that Jill are safe. Every mother have different ways to save their child.
Just because Lily help Miriam escape, does that means she is a bad mother for not making her child as 1st priority in such situation?
The door are blocked since she put the furniture there. To save her child, she need to take away the furniture right? If she open the door, those intruders will attack them which could cause some casualties. Miriam will get kidnapped and Lily and others may get injured. Yes, she is strong to the point able to lift up the furniture but she may have some kind motto not to hurt people or she doesnt know her strength.
I don't see how she thought about escaping before looking for jill ?!!!!!!
