if you bother to read the novel he goes more in depth into his past and currently he wants to keep what he is fully capable of under wraps due to the fact he would gain some extremely powerful enemies if he was to just show everyone that he has an affinity for all four elements and two to their deviant stage cause he is probably the only person that has it across the entire friggin continent! and that would bring harm to his family. so he is not showing what he can do because he is thinking about this long term and not just revealing himself to literally everyone and i think that its nice that author shows the long term effects of his actions and that art also is thinking about said effects and not being reckless
