There's something i'm confused about

Ok, i've been reading this fluff ball for 2 days straight and i've fallen deeply in love. But there is oooone little thing that confused me. In chap. 96 LiHuan says that the little girl with him is his sister's daughter. As far as i remember LiHuan's family consists of three people: His dad, his mom and himself. There was never a talk about a sister and i remember his dad was talking about being only three people celebrating LiHuan's birthdays. Is this a mistranslation? Or maybe when he said "sister" he meant a relative, not a sibling?

I think in all Asia, every relative count as sister/brother. I have so many cousins and yet when I walk with them or their child, I always said (out of habit) that they are my siblings or my nephew to people who ask me.

older sister in mandarin may also mean an older female not necessarily related to.
