The problem started when he somehow took advantage of her sexually three years ago and how the two of them never talked it out to clarify things afterwards. I'm guessing they really should have talked things out, because since their engagement was just the product of an agreement between their families, and thus both of them had most probably been told that they weren't really supposed to have sex till after they were married, their sleeping together behorehand was probably the result of a drunken accident... If he never told her that the real reason he slept with her before their marriage was because he really liked her, she may be wrongly assuming that he treats her so badly now either because he doesn't really like her or because he just used her that time... And the idiot male lead, instead of just clarifying it for her that her he slept with her out of having real feelings, just keeps testing her to see if she "finally grows a backbone"...
Considering how male-chauvinistic Chinese society has always been, what he expects of her is the same as asking her to be Wonder Woman enough to go against society, against her family and against her entire upbringing, all just for a man that's yet to prove himself worthy of all the risks that she'd be undertaking if she really went and did all that.
