grell hell

I don't want to offend anyone... but I just have to get it off my chest how much I hate Grell. I know some like him so, sorry, but I wanted to puke when he was 3rd or 4th in the polls. omg. I hate him so bad. I hate those teeth, that ugly smile, and the over-the-top drag queen act. May I please kill him? I need to real bad.

    I get it, mostly.

I tolerate Grell in the manga. I hate what the anime did to him/her/it/whatever (I'm gonna use they/them/their).

They were brought out in every filler arc because they were the fan-favorite. And they were treated like a total fool. Wielding safety scissors in half the battles, dressing up like an altar boy, and constantly getting horny for every male character, even the DOGMAN. They're supposed to be a third party antagonist to the main characters, yet they were treated like comic relief because of their personality in comparison to the rest of the cast.
Grell is a loud, bombastic character with strange attributes (they like cutting up people for the red aesthetic) and a unique design, meaning they don't exactly blend in, but at least in the manga, they were an actual threat that only appeared when it made sense for them to appear (like at every soul collection). They landed hits on their targets or successfully distracted them. They were smart enough to understand the gravity of certain situations (like Undy's death scythe). They were diligent enough to put their duty above getting some Sebastian ass, even if they kept making comments to him. They're strange, but they get shit done.

But that's just me. Some people just straight up hate their personality. I can't argue if you do, but I can tolerate them.

Grell is absolutely a man. He's clearly an off-the-rack drag queen imo
No offense but regarding Grell as a uniquely designed character who makes sense, there's that one little detail about him that absolutely everyone seems to be in-denial about. He was torturing and killing real living people, women, alongside Lady Red aka Jack the Ripper, who he later killed in cold blood just because he was suddenly bored with her attitude. How does one keep from hating his ugly-ass snaggle tooth self after that? Yet people are just as happy to selectively forget that. I didn't forget it.

I thought so too about trotting him out in the animes to make some fans happy rather than make a decent story. I hated him in the manga, too, because he bored the living shit out of me. Also, the loud noise made by chain saws and lawn mowers tears up my nerves any time I hear them in RL. Putting up with them in an anime and having so many cool scenes with Sebastian and Ciel interrupted by loud by anachronistic machinery, really grated.
So yeah, I'm sorry to everyone who likes him and mean no offense to them personally, but I hate him, and I don't have anything but bad words to say about him. It would have been funny if they'd replaced him with a character that fit in with the Victorian timeline who was quietly after Sebastian's cute butt and who was the opposite of Grell.

I've had the same name and profile pic since I made my account. My name is just the name of a song I like, and the picture is representative of that.

And thank you! I think you're pretty cool too. I like your honesty.

No problem! Grell in Book of Atlantic is honestly the truest version of Grell there is.

Funny thing is, Grell is not part of like 80% of the manga. Like I said, he's shoehorned into all of the S1 anime's filler arcs, and he was even shoehorned into Book of Circus (that part with Beast's record). He's actually not seen at all from Jack the Ripper to the Campania (Book of Atlantic).

This also kinda ties back to this whole "comic relief" thing. In order to make it feasible for him to team up with Ciel and Sebastian, the had to A: Give them a common enemy, and B: Make Grell not as murder-y as he was when he was Jack. And that would entail making Ciel not hate him for killing Madam Red and getting away with it, which I thought was dumb.

So yeah, in reality, Ciel and Sebastian have never teamed up with Grell. They haven't teamed up with any of the Grim Reapers, because they're literally Sebastian's enemy. The part in Book of Circus with Will was a hateful agreement to stay out of each other's way, and Undertaker was a quid pro quo agreement with Ciel. Grell has actually tried to kill them every time he's seen them, which makes sense. Even with Undertaker's capture, it was a matter of "we'll have to get him before they do" rather than an actual team up. That's why it never made sense for him to be comic relief to me. But he is a good fighter, and he does his job decently in Book of Atlantic, so he gets a pass from me in those regards.

Yes, I agree that Grell being comic relief is misplaced, and I'm offended when an author is swayed by the fan's opinions, especially when it's not that hard to see when it happens. The fans have terrible taste when they form a market research conglomerate, which is obvious to the point of absurdity. It's weak on an author's part to respond to it instead of believing in their art the same way they did when they began the story. I hate it when art is transformed into product.

On a completely different and contradictory note on my part, I think those reapers should back off when Sebastian is defending a child, the undertaker, too, bastards! They act like demons, really, so how does their murderous intent to wipe out Sebastian add up, especially since Ceil can't survive without him. It all fks with my concept of a grim reaper's job, which is to ferry the soul to its next location. Know your role, Grell and co!

One thing that I can't believe I didn't notice was that Sebastian likes to fight. For him, it's not horrible from start to finish, which is how I'd feel about constantly having defend my life and Ciel's against death by chain saw. I need to stop projecting my aversion to violence onto Sebastian's hobby. LOL Maybe I'm way off about him liking a good, bloody massacre now and then, but him being a demon's gotta figure into it. LOL

I flaked on your name and icon. LOL probably old age

Grell is suppose to be the tranny/drag queen comedic relief and an awful and redundantly used stereotype in anime. I dislike him/her for that reason but in any other case they're pretty funny I guess. I don't know. I don't hate them either..Just my opinion. Also, its fine not to like a character why misgender them? Kinda rude no? You're reading yaoi but you wanna be transphobic or ?

him/her? them? He's identified in every pronoun in both anime and manga as a man. wth?
and them is more than one person. I absolutely refuse to accept calling a single person a they or them. Sexuality is hard enough to sort out without muddying it up by making everyone a they them.
How is anyone misgendering anyone? He's a man. It's acknowledged all over the manga and anime! Transgender - that's every single person who isn't at the far-end hardcore heterosexual poles of the spectrum. Why for pete's sake do you call yourself crack-dad? Am I abusively misgendering you if I call you she? Maybe you're the one for not saying Msgendering. LOL

Ummmmm no ones saying Grell is a they/them sis Yana is demonstrating Grell as a transgender woman, not a man. Biologically a man, if you will. It's pretty clear from the way Grell behaves and adores surrounding herself with feminine items and men. But if you're not into individuals that are transgender then just say you're transphobic and go ? Like i'm confused LOL

If he refers to his own self as he, then I think the right pronoun for him is he. If everyone in the story refers to him as he, then I think the right pronoun is he. How do we know he's not a transexual? I think it's nice of you to make the effort to modify your language to suit some, but transgender is an assumption. Until he refers to himself as trangender, I think we should not guess at it. That's my opinion. I'm not trying to write anything in stone or offend anyone.

-I don't know what bb is. What is it?
-I was in eighth grade before there was any such thing as manga.
Anyway, fuck Grell. Let's talk about what a magnificent brat Ciel is. I dig the hell out of Sebastian, but Ciel's my favorite. I'm reading K again and seeing how it does sometimes look like they hate each other. It's hilarious.
I like Lady Elizabeth fine, but I have to admit that I'm a little glad that in the end she's not going to be able to sink her cute little claws into ourCiel. I mean I don't know how one comes back from perpetrating a gigantic sellout on a bigger-than-life character like Ciel. During the trap and frame-up job, it was her pointing her finger at him and calling him "the one who's been lying to us all this time" that put the final nail in his coffin.
Looks to me like she's betting big on the wrong horse.
