I think his original purpose was to find her and keep his promise to her brother... but he is now falling in love with her. As for the horrors, I think they’re things of the past come to haunt them, or there is someone who doesn’t want her to return to the house

so her real brother is dead and the marquis is taking care of her now by pretending to be her brother....this wouldnt be so weird if it wasnt for the ghosts, dreams and hidden smirks that the marquis sometimes wears also is he in love with her or is he trying to kill her or both???? i am confusion
