How come they are already to be engaged? Maybe we misunderstood something? Was there a problem in translation? Here is what I think happened:

So back in chapter 20 Ares agreed to help her in any shape or form as long as she agreed to be his fake fianceé and help him gather intel inside the palace to allow him to find this item. An obvious lie, as there is no item and he was just looking for a believable excuse to make her his. And is most certainly never letting her go. But I digress. ╮( ̄▽ ̄)╭

In chapter 36 they re-start their negotiations. Alicia says she doesn't want to take advantage of Ares and would rather get a job as his advisor. And Ares keeps arguing that she doesn't need to go through all of that, as long as she becomes his fianceé he would do anything for her. So how come they are now planing their engagement?

Maybe it was the translation, maybe it was just bad writing or even that she had a change of heart that will be explained in the next chapters. In case of the 2 first options, it might have been that she never said no to his proposal, but in order not to take advantage of him she will ALSO become the Black Sun's advisor - which would grant her a very good salary, and money is something she desperately needs right now.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what will happen next. Either way it seems like we are getting closer to the blessed moment where the annoying princess Edith realizes that Ares will never look her way because his heart (and other body parts LOL) already belongs to Alicia (๑•ㅂ•)و✧

? Was what Alicia said as her reason a lie then? She said that it was because her brother was highly sensitive to the situation she was in and wanted her to meet people normally. There are lots of rumors going around about her and Noel rn so getting engaged to Ares would quell that.

Like she said in the last chapter, suddenly getting engaged to her brother's hero was also going to be a problem. The little emperor is prone to jealousy where Alicia is concerned, which is understandable since she was his parental figure and only family member for so long - as we can see in his conversation with the maid in chapter 46. Alicia needs to give her brother some time for him to get used to the idea of her dating. Which is why she asked Ares to delay the engagement and to act like a couple in love in front of her brother. I guess she is hoping that her brother will accept it easier if he sees that she is happy and has some time to get to know Ares outside of their usual dynamic of emperor and war hero.

So no, it was not a lie. She really is concerned about that. But it's not about her reputation in high society, it really is about Kai. And I guess she is now trying to figure out a way to be with Ares in spite of that.

(I'm not sure if I expressed myself properly in the last coment LOL)

I guess their deal to fake an engagement to be married was never off, what was out of question was her relying on that and only that to get his help in gathering the power and money she needs to free Kai from his aristocratic manipulators, without giving Ares anything in return... Her becoming his advisor is a way to repay him.

This is my interpretation of what happened:

In chapter 20, he proposes to be in a “fake” engagement, but she rejects his offer (even though he said it was “only to have an informant in the palace”). He still sends stuff over to her later in the story as a means of trying to make their engagement real, but she rejects all the stuff (and thus the pink diamond is not seen or worn at the Victory Celebration). Now, she is bringing up negotiations to be in a fake engagement for an entirely different reason: to stop the rumors of her going out with other men and to put her brother’s mind at ease. Notice that in chapter 20 and the other chapter that she never says yes to his proposals. I just read it through from the beginning through these last couple days (had never read it until now), so my memory is pretty fresh.

To both you and Artemis Fire: Okay NOW this all makes freaking sense! It was the wording that really confused me. If she refused the engagement because she was worried about her brother why did that suddenly change to her ACCEPTING the engagement because she was worried about him? Same if she accepted the engagement only because she was no longer worried about him, why did she suddenly become unworried about him? But now those questions are answered. Thank you both!
