I reckon all his emotions were pretty contradictory at the time, and he probably didn't realise just how swayed he'd been by Veronica and how contracitory they were (even if he still went and activated the spell in the end...from what has been revealed so far, that could almost have been a jealous reaction as much as an intention to carry through his original duty).

Yo man, Eugene, I'm getting confused. First you wanna separate them then want to let them escape. Talk about contradictions to the extreme. Now, I don't know if you're genuinely good or just plain neutral or a lesser evil.
