I have the opposite effect. The very few chapters make events way more memorable. Reading 1 chapter a month means I have fewer events to remember and I usually can either jump right in or just skip through the previous chapter and then read the new one.
Fewer things happening makes it easier to remember I think.
The good thing about the super slow update is that it's been so long you'd have to reread from the beginning and get the chance to experience the emotions again.
