Why the wife is to blame? Because he was working with earbud silencers on, and she left the kid, and he didn't know she left. SHE JUST LEFT so she could go shopping. All along, she's been a shit mother and wife the flashbacks show. Only interested in shopping. She left the balcony open. She left without getting feedback from the husband who was WORKING TO SUPPORT THEM. Then they humiliate him at the funeral and blame him. Then they threaten him when he wants a divorce. She didn't love him and only stayed married so he could work to support her.
The guy tried. He really loved his son and wanted him (unlike her). He worked hard. He went literally INSANE, because he wanted his son back so much, so he became father to the weird little cave kid. He went insane.
The wife was never insane. She was never loving. She was never good. She was an outright bitch, and she deserved all she got and so did her shitty parents. The ones I feel sorry for are the kids, the victims in the cave (like the chained up woman). But the vicious, unloving, shitty mother? NOPE.
