I wondered about that too.
the point of dead/bitchy mothers is to help build on the character of a heartless (but actually kind and a lil lonely) king.
If the king currently has a nice and alive wife it doesnt align with his characterisation as a heartless and powerful person bc hes constantly exposed to kindness (which is the cure for icy hearts) if u know what i mean
If those mom are alive then the dads won't have screentime (▰˘◡˘▰)
But where is the Mother? if she's dead, why in all this webtoon mothers die or are bitchy? Σ(っ°Д °;)っ
