Well she probably take too much sleeping pills and end up dying, since Lucas show some pills when he is talking about her death. So yeah, I found it strange too since even Athy didn't say anything about suicide (clearly you don't forget that you wanted to die since she would has think that since a moment ago to really try). It would have been great if he said that out loud so Athy could react to that.
And yeah maybe he couldn't get close to her and kill her because of the curse. It's a good theory
And about the branch I agree, in the novel it's different if I remember well. So I'm completly lost rn ╮(￣▽￣)╭
