Well, I'd say the whole manga has somewhat simplified it for the sake of the whole story's setting, so yeah, I try not to think too deeply about what actually makes a good striker while I read this one (not that I really know enough about soccer/football to come to a conlusion about it anyway...).
On the other hand, the context is Japan and Japanese football, where they (according to the story) have talented and skilled players but lack a predatory something that the international top strikers apparently have. It isn't saying that you don't need other things too (talent, skills, dedication etc. etc.), it's saying that Japanese strikers have all those things EXCEPT for ego. I don't know how true that is (or, at the least, how much sports media in Japan might give this evaluation), but it means that his emphasis on ego in this story is aimed specifically at Japanese strikers, and not strikers generally.
So, I guess if I think of it in that context, it's easier not to get too caught up in whether his emphasis on ego is really important or not.

Anyway, I just wanted to add that sometimes I suspect I sound to others on the internet like I'm arguing against someone's comment when I'm merely thinking about their comment and adding thoughts that I think are interesting. So I wanted to clarify in case it unintentionally sounded judgmental or rejecting.

I just started reading this and I'm on chapter 3.. The art caught my eye first before the summary..
Anyway, I think I get why the crazy dude puts so much emphasis on 'ego'.. But I don't get it at the same time.. I mean, yeah, maybe strikers are all about scoring goals.. If you have the skills and confidence to judge and execute your plays to win, I think that's what makes you a striker.. Or am I too simple?
When Isagi questioned himself why he kicked the ball at Kira I was kinda confused.. I mean, you see a ball you gotta kick it at the goal.. Or do I think that way cause I'm a loner and don't care about anything else?
