That hurt. She's trying hard to not think about getting close to him (he's unconsciously nice and even goes back to get her) and he breaks her with that sentence. I know, maybe she's misunderstanding him, but the story does well to step in her shoes and get into the feeling that it's a "job". And it hurts.
