Well they are nobles and royalty so they know a lot of the subject. Pretty sure they know a lot about it from a young age too

Medieval Europe had short life spans. Getting married at 12 was normal, so was having 10 kids.

Honestly? I saw it as a childish crush thing that they are getting away with since they are from high ranking families. Any little girl or boy can proclaim that they want to get married to their crush.
