I had interpreted it more in terms of when people just blindly trust in him, it means they're not sharing in the challenge and responsibility of the job/relationship. That he wanted (especially in the relationship) someone to run along side him, to say what they really think and really want, rather than to leave him leading all alone - which means he has all the support and gets to do things his way, but also has all the responsibility without ever getting their genuine feedback.
