That’s a full break of suspension of disbelief for me
From the lie to then motive, how convenient can it be that her life is a mess ?and how could someone who witness the evil of that family dare to bargain anything of importance at the cost of their own values to them ?
She obviously was the only one with a sense of ethic, and she suddenly forget it, but also turn totally dumb ? How on earth could she trust these people who fired her for giving a slice of bread to a child ?

Because you’ll indeed get dumber when a life is at stake. Your brain won’t function properly when you”re panicking and she clearly was so. She’s at the end of her wits, she’ll grab any sliver of hope if it means she could get her daughter back out of desperation.
I could sympathize with her because I think I could easily make the same mistake as her if the same thing happened to my family
I don't know, I can't completely hate that lady at all. What she tried to do was wrong, absolutely horrid; but her motivations weren't inherently evil. She's a mother who lost her husband, and who's child's life is being held over her head. It must have been beyond terrifying.
For her to turn around and repent by trying to save Leslie, she's a good person in a bad situation. I pity her
