Or maybe some has read but not quite able to catch the information... so here I will slightly explain things going on regarding Claire. . . The engagement did not get canceled suddenly. There was war. Rowan is sent to the war. Her family and Rowan both decided to cancel the engagement because there are possibility that Rowan could die in war. And she also thought the same, rather than waiting for someone who could die at any moment, better cancel the engagement and aim for someone higher which is the crown prince. So she made some kind of deal with the prince in promise that he will take her as one of his mistress. And then, the war ended with Rowan’s victory. Claire only know this news, because at that time, Rowan was still staying at the fallen kingdom where Erin was. During the time Rowan is courting Erin in that fallen Kingdom.... Claire who don’t know that, start to make plan to flirt with Rowan when he come back. And she also have some kind of deal with the prince to be some kind of spy to be planted in Rowan’s side. The prince aim to bring down Rowan. Claire know about this. What Claire thinking was that she gonna keep close to Rowan while spying... but she plan to check in the long run, to see which side would be better for the benefit, if being the only duchess with Rowan or just being one of the mistress of the future king. She will play along for both side and choose the one who win. However, when Rowan finally come back, he bring with him a wife. Nothing is wrong here, his engagement was already nullified far before he married Erin. There is no betrayal and no cheating happening here. Claire feel flustered because now her plan is not gonna work. But she is not giving up and too prideful. So she decided to still get close and courting the married man. She is also kinda in a pinch, since she have that deal with the prince... But that deal now can become the death of her because it can been seen as she is useless in the eyes of the prince. Then... she still failed to get Rowan’s heart and has been rejected totally. The prince realising this, decided to slowly getting rid of Claire. Prince is destroying her family by sounding out her father’s law breaking act and strip the whole family off of nobility. She is captivated in a prison like room to keep her from spilling what she has known so far. She is kept alive in case there are still some kind of use. When prince know that Rowan is attached to Erin, prince thinking of using Claire to somehow harm Erin. And if lucky, Erin could end up dead. Claire with all escapes has been closed, decided to kidnap Erin and kill her. She still have her useless pride, so she try to dress up when meeting Erin. She don’t want to be looked down on even in her current state of affair. She decided to kill Erin with her own hand instead of getting someone else to do it is also all because of her pride. To me, she does seems pitiful, but she earned all of these bad things because of her greed, endless pride and dealing with the devil (crown prince). The pride here is her being noble woman of a power and wealth to be envied by many. Maybe with this incident, she will see what is her wrong, repent, and be saved by Erin. When that happens and she build good relationships with Erin, Claire under Rowan‘s protection can become the strength to defence against Crownprince’s evil plot. Having to deal with the prince for awhile, Claire certainly know something even if only little bit regarding the crown prince. Which it could become a weaknesses of the prince.
