No it's not a spoiler, (my speculation) that's how I saw the situation when he was teaching her as a child, she is smart , learns quickly and to me it look like he felt threaten by her intelligence.
What's Valerie's plan again? Was there a plan? I don't see her making any plots to break the engagement or have the Duke and serenia have a happy ever after....
