We'll never know if she would have been more forward or not... She might have backed off right away... And if he really had gotten a drink poured over him just for rejecting her in a "nice" way (which I'm not so sure would have happened) the uncle would have gotten on his side and even owed him one for getting him in that mess by insisting on this girl-hunting farse.

Well sometimes the truth hurts. But I guess he could have said he wasn't interested, then she would have been more forward and then he would end up uncomfortable, and try another tactic to be nice about turning her down and he would have had a drink poured on him, and she would have been mad, and he would have been called everything but a child of God....I guess by being upfront you cut out the middle man. Can't be nice to everybody.
