It never said he loved her, or that she loved him. I do think they had a relationship but not a romantic one.
We are not sure if that's what the story is implying, maybe they're friends.
The one who thought they were a lover is MC. So it is still not clear if they are really love each other or not.

After the mistakes she did her first try, she realizes that she has a debt to pay and currently thinks of herself as a tool in order to right the wrongs she had committed once.
I do feel for her though, cuz she was a villainess for the sake of survival and it backfired on her. That doesn't mean that's she's planning on dying this lifetime either.
Maybe they didn't have a relationship, but the fact is that mc thought they did, and had previously wanted to make it up to the mc. This is... counterproductive, on that front.
