Got no clue how old you are but shit like this happens in real life more than you think. He could have threaten to kill her or the girls if the mom thought about taking them away.

But I seen stuff like this alot with male or female
Like when the father leaves and the mom takes her anger out on the kids or when the mother do and the father does the same
I don't really think it's ok to leave your kid in a bad environment unless you deem that ok or you just plain care for the kid

that isn’t an excuse though. when you become a parent, until that kid can look after themselves, your main concern shouldn’t be your own safety. her two girls needed her, she only took her boys to safety
