I honestly don't think icchi is completely insecure. I think he unconsciously was not sure about his feelings for ayumi. I say that by the way how he acts with taka in the end of the story. He's much more straightforward and assertive despite being nervous and awkward. In the end what he felt for ayumi was just friendship. She also notices that when she said that he grabbed her hand like they where siblings.
