But I'm pretty sure in arias previous life he did become Iris' pawn especially after his huge failure with the casino. I think she mentioned he basically had no power and the nobles were in control just like with his father. But when Aria came she gave him advice and as well as help improve his influence with her investments and with her revenege he was finally able to take down Iris and her family and the rest of the nobles.
Of course your right we don't know if he ever regained power after Aria's death but I'm just assuming that with Aria's restart she changed her future and his
Well in what I understood he accepted to marry Iris and be a pawn so that he can still "manage" to take them down by the inside (but he said it would have taken a lot of time then)
Well I'm in the minset that it was their faith. Aria was destined to die once by stupidity to be able to "grow" and Asher was destined to be helped by the Newly-Aria.
