Yeah I kinda felt that way too. I think it was to show that despite how hard Seven is working to be a decent person, he still had a very bad upbringing and when things get hard he can behave violently or can make threats like that... Being good isn't easy if you weren't brought up properly... And Eight literally kidnapped and assaulted his boy, so it was an eye-for-an-eye threat. Still fucked up though. Poor guys.
