The original story.

From what I remember the graduation ceremony was only suppose to be the half-way point of the original game. Whoever you attended the ceremony with was the route you were on for the rest of the game and was the character you were trying to fully win over. So maybe he did come to love her, but we'll never know though since that's not going to get covered.
