Yeah in the novel it is stated that he couldn't control his body movement and just has the feeling to hug something that seems warm or interesting to him.....if I'm not mistaken.

And don't be confused. It's not like he liked Heronia in the original plot. He appreciated her because she was interesting to him, but the last lines he said kinda pointed that, if he ever gets tired of her – like a toy – he will throw her away.
And while Bertia was also amusing person to him to observe, he never thought of getting rid with her. And not just because she is her fiancé. She really has earned his love the past years.
