Akira got beaten up one night and kaoru was the one who found him passed out and since he cant accept his brother’s death, kaoru pretended that akira was his younger brother named mamoru. Akira played along cause he didnt have a home or someone to call family and just stayed there with kaoru and eventually fell in love
