prob because those who frequent these types of stories have grown accustomed to EVERYTHING being female so that the main male lead can have an even bigger harem. as annoying as it is, shounen artists seem to think the MC can be the only male in a story...
i agree that you're right though about the cat god being male since ONLY male lions have manes.
