not sure if it's the one op talked about but i think it's 'Pachinko' by Min Jin Lee. A good read if you're looking into finding out more about korean lives during the Japanese occupation.

I originally also read a novel around this era and things were so fked up then. They were literally not even allowed to speak in Korean or even retain their Korean names. It was really painful to read
