just like refugees and people living in poor conditions irl it's not that easy. Also there was a time irl when women were treated like in this manwa in any country you were in :(

...and victims of abuse. I read Ester Williams' autobiography and she was in an abusive relationship and she said when asked why she didn't leave him she was like "and where would I go?" you're Ester f'ing Williams!!! if she didn't think she had options... people being abused are fixed in a mental state of hopelessness.

In Ebony's case, she really didn't have any options. Really, where would she go?
She lives in a country where everything you do as a woman is dictated and decided by the males in your life (primarily the father of a spouse). Support groups or shelters for woman aren't even heard of, and laws protecting women are currently non-existent (though our MCs are working on that).
Considering how horrible her husband and father were, she had no family, no friends, no establishment to turn to. Not even her government :(
I'm betting that this is the type of country that requires the permission and/of escort of your spouse/male parent to even leave the country, otherwise she would have been stopped and brought back (unless she was able to secure underground means of travel, but who would she even talk to?).

...What makes this even more sad though is that all this really does happen in real life.

    yes definitely.
I meant that even if there are options it's still hard to "just leave" because of the mental abuse/control.
