If you're talking about the latest chapter with Emel/Emiel stuck in the dragon's illusion, that entire sequence was meant to illustrate how terrified he is of losing Estelle. He's afraid that he won't be able to protect her from harm, from death (shown by her appearing, then disappearing, as well as her head in that bell jar); But he's also just as terrified of being the one to hurt her (shown by him stepping on her severed arm, then again when he touches her is the forest and her arms fall off + her body kinda disintegrates).

It's been hinted at before that, because of whatever Emel/Emiel did in his past or what happened to him, he feels that he's a tainted and horrid being, barely even able to call himself human. He feels that he's unworthy of even being near Estelle, whom he considers to be pure and innocent and perfect. He has some serious self-loathing issues where he thinks that even his presence corrupts Estelle, and will only harm her in the end. The fact that she was actually kidnapped as a child while under his care doesn't help----since it only justified his thoughts that he's incapable of keeping her from all harm (himself or external factors). He still hasn't been able to forgive himself for that, even though it wasn't his fault

Great! I always get so worried that nothing makes sense, since I tend to ramble or overexposing things. So, I'm glad it was helpful~
