Well there was a time I bullied someone, it was not so bad nothing violent just lying one time to make them look bad the reason was that I was envious/mad of them getting higher notes than me. Karma got me some years later.
But yeah answering your question I think most people do it out of envy, frustration or because they follow what others are doing.
